Description

Udell is tall, dark of skin, hair, and eyes, with a powerful stature and graceful movement. His hygiene is meticulous, his hair cropped short though there's often a beard, his hands clean, nails short and carefully filed.

Personality

Warm, kind and caring, Udell was a natural for the Mercies. He feels a draw to look after those at the end of their lives and make their last days and weeks as easy as possible until the suffering ends - but none of that means he’s weak. He has a spine of steel, as needed by any battlefield physician, and while he might seem meek and mild on the surface, if pushed he can and will reveal the iron fist within the velvet glove. He does have a temper, however hard he strives towards calm.

Background

Born the third son of a tailor in Bastion, Udell was drawn to the Faith from a very early age. Intelligent and warm, he wanted to become a Mercy when he grew up - and when he grew up, he did. He became a Mercy when he turned eighteen, and Godsworn on his twenty-first birthday; after a perfectly ordinary apprenticeship he became a full physician, specializing in battlefield medicine and end-of-life care.

Many years - and many battlefields - later, he found himself leading the Mercies of Bastion. Rumors of the rediscovery of the Lost were swiftly followed by more information; wary at first, it took him some time to investigate - but when he did, he realized that he’d been serving Death as well as Lagoma for quite some time.

Escaping the sack of Bastion thanks to the help of some of those present for the Seraph’s retirement party, Udell made his way to Arx, where he spent time meditating in the shrine of Death as well as in the shrine of Lagoma.

Hearing stories of Udell's service attending at the bedsides of those the Mercies couldn't save, it was Dominus Aureth himself that approached Udell about serving as Archlector to the Queen of Endings, the post empty since the passing of the last who held it. A humble man, Udell saw the potential of such a position, namely in spreading word of Her reclaiming and furthering the proper practice of compassionate vigil. His acceptance was subtle, but his presence and service has remained anything but.
