Description

Narrow blue eyes in a ruddy, tanned face peer out beneath brown hair, starting to grey at the sides. Cropped short on his head and clean shaven, with perhaps a days stubble on his jaw. The far right side of his face is marked by irregular scarring, near the ear. A hands breadth over six feet in height, he is broad of shoulder and thick of build.

Personality

Courteous toward his betters and cautious toward the unknown, Gian is well aware of his good fortune in life and determined to avoid losing his place through any hasty mistake. A meticulous sort, he can seem to obsess over minor details. Though few can recall seeing him lose his temper, he is no stoic, keen to enjoy good drink and good company.

Background

The son and grandson of clothmakers, he grew up among relative comfort in a rather well-off peasant family in Gemecitte (Crowned Hill side). A second son, marked by youthful curiosity as well as a strong back, when levies were called, years ago, Gian stood forward for his family, and marched off behind the knights and men-at-arms to do his feudal duty. Many found the expedition against an Abandoned tribe to be terrifying, but for Gian it was a thing of fascination. His mind was riveted by the sheer logistics of moving so many men, so many wagons for tents and food, not to mention smiths, cooks, and healers. Then the fighting came. More of a chase than a battle, he was in youthful awe of the knights on their chargers, running ahead of his fellow peasants in an effort to keep up. Once, a knight dropped her sword, and Gian was near enough to hand it back up. At the time, hed never been more proud. On the march home, two of the grooms ran off, and Gian begged and pleaded for the chance to take the runaways place. This was how he first joined the retinue of the Duke of Zaffria. In the near 20 years since, he has served as a groom, a common infantryman, drill master, man at arms, and finally as an officer. He has spent more of his life under arms in service to the Zaffria family than he has spent outside of it.
