Once, Nicholaus was called carefree by his friends and lazy by his enemies. That all changed when Nicholaus went on his little 'adventure.' Whatever happened while he was gone, changed him. Now, Nicholaus is possessed of a purposeful ambition and an idealist's outlook. He sees the Compact as good, as bringing safety and prosperity to many. A singular drive has possessed him to see it successful and strong, to guard it against threats both inside and out, and he will happily participate in any manner of social game to achieve that end. He presents a gentlemanly, if intense figure. He's never impolite if it can be helped, and there's a certain sense of focus to nearly everything he does or says. He's a staunch supporter of his friends and allies, quick to leap to their defense with a good word in the right ear if he can put it there.

Once, long ago, Oili might have been an exuberant child filled with the mirth of spring and laughter of fall. She might have had dreams of becoming a princess, hair billowing down the side of a tower to allow a charming knight to take her away to an extravagant land far away. Then, as if a mirror was smashed, the wars began and her mirth changed to melancholy, her laughter to gloom and her dreams to hatred. A woman whose dreams were snatched away, she devoted herself entirely to one task at a time, working down a growing list of small but necessary tasks. It's good for her to work, because without work she becomes nothing more than a bundle of worry and missed opportunities.

One might describe Gyliam as a bitter, snuffed-out candle. He's often slumped on a sidewalk, propped up against a wall with his tin cup set out and his walking stick clutched to his side. On a particularly good day, he might be feebly calling out for spare change, clinking his tin cup around. On one of his -better- days, he might just have the energy to snap and threaten passersby when not a single coin is spared his way, cursing their privilege and the good fortune granted them. Such is his favorite topic: his envy of the fortunate circumstances of those richer and better off than himself. Any advice or suggestions given him, he immediately bats aside, often retorted with self-pity over his situation.

One might expect a Voice of House Thrax to be a cold, calculating woman, or a timid, submissive creature. Donella decided long ago that she would be neither of those things. Well, not wholly so. She skirts a fine line between embodying Thraxian ideals of strength and cold pragmatism (or murderous ruthleness), with being a capable, intelligent woman, able to keep up with the staunchest politicians at court. She rarely speaks out of turn, and never over her fellows, but when she has control of the conversation, she commands respect. She uses her silence, to watch and learn, and then acts decisively, before many realize she isn?t meek and mild. She embraces all aspects of her being - joys, hatreds, respect, tradition, happiness, cruelty - all of it, for she thinks not doing so would provide someone a weakness to exploit. She allows people to see what they expect, and then gets what she wants, however necessary.

One might expect a man born in a land so remote to share similar traits to his environment. Yet rather than being cold or remote, Magnus exhibits a welcoming, if quiet, demeanour when it comes to others. While not prone to loud displays of exuberance, he is warm, with an easy laugh and smile, though rarely enough to lose his calm. This serenity also manifests in his patience, and even his speech, deliberate, in no hurry to rush through discussions. Indeed, he is one who wishes to hear differing opinions, hear them debated, that all viewpoints might be known, and a better perception of the world achieved. It is in this collegial manner that he rules, prefering to listen than to speak. Yet when he does, it is with confidence. He knows not all can be pleased, of course. But it costs him little to take the time to try and see the world from their perspective, understand their woes and fears, as well as their hopes and aspirations, before he makes a decision that would affect them all. In this, he is loyal to not only his people's well-being, but now the Compact's as well. Determined and certain of the course taken, he stands to prove that the diplomacy used upon Shav'arvani tribes is not wasted, and that though he remains loyal to his people and their initial purpose, loyalty to the Compact is no lesser for it.

One might think that a man so energetic would leave the kind of chaos in his wake as a tornado might, yet such is not Mahir's way. Everything has its proper place, its proper time, an order that elevates the parts to become greater than their sum. A chorus singing as a unified whole is as important to its integrity and beauty as the stone, glass, marble and other materials for a monument of architectural beauty. This emphasis on group rather than individual can also be seen in his own work. He does not simply apply the concepts of the smith when he creates a new ring, but adds in the eye and perspectives of the painter and sculptor, even as he also sings to his creation, the product of not one but three branches of creation all seeking a common finality. Yet with his recent arrival to Arvum, Mahir has had to contend with new ideas and perspectives that have troubled the tranquil certainty of his life, forcing him to ask himself questions that may no longer be answered through the will of another.

One must always stick to their code of honor and that is what Nikias does. Little can sway him from what he considers the most righteous path. Sure, sometimes that 'righteousness' is a little sketchy to most but there is no doubting the honor he gives. He treats all the same until they have proven that they need to be treated differently. Just because someone thinks they deserve respect because of who they are or what they do does not mean it is true. This mannerism makes him arrogant and cocky, as he firmly believes little can sway him from his honor and chosen path. This gives him confidence in spades.

One needs not stare long to summarize the disposition of this here creature one gazes upon. That look that fosters little to no sympathy; that perpetual stringing of her lips that accentuates a lingering disdain. Elfriede has lived a grey and black life that has spared her a want to ever loosen the shell of her emotions to those that'd pry for them. When addressed, her words are monosyllabic and surgical; when amused, an unmannerly hum or hem may rise, and when brought to a conundrum of feelings she's much like a shelled creature, and will retreat into the quiet foreboding of her much-loved silence. And with it, reveal nothing. She shows a fondness for wild creatures, and a predisposition to give in to her wanderlust when left to her own devices. She perceives violence as a natural rule of life, and takes part in it with nary a hint of pleasure, but a sense of dark, brooding duty.

One would think a foreign princess so far removed from her home would be inclined to sulk and pout about her current lot in life, but that most certainly isn't so with Katarina. Quick to smile and slow to anger, she is one to disregard her own travesties and misfortunes to embrace positivity in all its forms around her; be it the delight of yet another small discovery in her time immersed in a culture so very different from her own or cresting the tumultous waves of the high seas on another explorative expedition, there is very little that can incite her ire. That being said, if there is one thing she cannot stand, it is one who shamelessly inflicts wrong-doing and injustice upon those undeserving.

Oona has always been a woman who marches to the beat of her own drum. If she wants to dance, she'll dance, even if it means she knocks over a vase. If she wants to sing, she'll sing, even if she shatters a mirror. If she wants to stand stock still and listen to birdsong, she will, even if she's standing in the middle of the road. And if she wants to go swimming naked, well...you get the idea. She's a remarkably tolerant person, save regarding two issues: her family (don't mess with them. just. don't.) and thralldom, having been the daughter of escaped thralls herself, who managed to make it to the freedom of Deepwood's shores when she was a child. Oona is a lady who loves life - food, wine, a beautiful sunset, but she's also highly observant and quite crafty. If she seems a bit kooky, well, she's happy to have people underestimate her. She enjoys the look of surprise on people's faces when the realize that not only is she her son's Voice, but she's damn good at it. Not so much the kooky old lady after all...

Orathy isn't the smartest crayon in the box, but it's hard to say how much of that is deliberate. He often seems to be listening, but how much he understands and processes is left mysterious. He has a rough and tumble sense of humor, and a low taste for the lewd. He's not interested in fighting for fun but he is very interested in fighting for coin. He likes to make money, and he'll make money doing pretty much anything. It's hard to say that Orathy is trustworthy; it would be more accurate to say that Orathy can be trusted to do exactly as Orathies are wont to do. He will take money; he will fight hard; he will drink hard; he will laugh at terrible jokes; he will get up tomorrow and do it all again.

Orchid is a quiet and gentle person. She gets easily flustered and often doesn't realize when she says, or someone says, something that can be taken in multiple ways. She takes many things said to her seriously. She is quite shy around new people. When she first gets to know someone she is very quiet and uncertain on how to talk with them. As she gets to know someone she is bolder and more open with how she talks. She tries very hard to address people with appropriate titles but it often escapes her, as she doesn't entirely pay attention to the 'who is who'. She is loyal, almost to a fault, to those she cares about and has a temper. She is a very bad liar, as she always has tell-tale signs of her attempts to lie.

Ordain is faithful to his pantheon and serves his majesty loyally. Though he wants to be a pure knight, he is still young and is sometimes convinced by worldly desires. He is willing and eager to learn and better himself always.

Orland is cynical, distrustful and suspicious. He's also shrewd, cunning and incredibly observant. Despite an aloof cynicism that dominates his expression he can be quite personable when necessary. He can cross the full range of emotions and is expressively an open book. Yet he is incredibly discreet and incredibly tight lipped when need arises and has all the makings of a trusted and particularly effective confidant. Hardened from an early life on the streets of the lower boroughs, he has yet to quite fit comfortably into his role as Voice for a noble house.

Ornella has always lived in the shadows. The light makes her uncomfortable. She's guarded and always seems worried about an impending disaster that probably doesn't exist. Orrin is in many ways larger than life. While he can spot artifice, he has no patience for it, and is deeply protective of his people as well as their freedom - which makes sense, as the majority of his County's population are descended from, or actually are former thralls. His nature tends to default toward being relaxed and easygoing, quick to laugh and preferring friendship over fighting, but when it comes to his duties and obligations as Count, he has razor sharp forcus and will become dead serious in a blink. Having been widowed some years ago, while he has no problems finding company as suits him, he is starting to long once more for a true partner.

Oskar favors the long view of a question. Sometimes this can seem indecisive or over-cautious, but when a misplaced step can bring ruin to a house, Oskar is the sort who doesn't mind taking a bit longer to be sure he has all the information he needs. When his temper slips, as all tempers do, he tends to get angry quickly and explosively, before recovering just as quickly. Considered quick witted by many, he enjoys showing off that keen wit. He was raised to rule and he means to do it well, damn what anyone else thinks.
