Description

Built on lean, rangy lines, there is a wiry strength to Aureth that does not so much lend him bulk as give him the understated air of something slim and surprisingly effective -- like a mongoose. A blond mongoose. His fair hair is worn long but usually pulled back in a loose tail at his neck, a dusty gold in hue lightened by premature gray at the temples and threading through its fall that gives it an almost silvery look. His eyes are gray, hinted with blue in certain light or if he dresses for it. His thick, defined eyebrows and neat, well-kept beard are a richer, more brownish-gold than his hair, though both can bleach lighter in summer. His skin is a little weathered and marked by lines at the corners of his mouth and eyes. He tends to freckle. He has a strong jaw and a bold nose, and the faint pinch of a frown at his brow rarely entirely fades. When it does, it is to a wide, brilliant smile that transforms and youthens his face, and invites the observer to join him.

Personality

Resourceful and clever, Aureth pays close attention to the social cues of others and uses them well. Conversation is performance art. The real Aureth is more elusive, a creature hidden beneath layered masks of charm and reserve. Kindness and gentleness are as much a tool as anything else, although in his hands, they can be well wielded. There's no doubt he has ambition, but what that ambition is becomes a little more nebulous. What does Aureth want? Who knows. He's restless and discontented, especially when he drinks, and candidly, it's possible that Aureth himself doesn't even know.

Background

A younger son of a branch off the main line of the Grayhope family, Aureth was an odd child: quickfingered and resourceful, the middle class child of an artisan with questionable ties, his most frequent punishments were from wandering away from the family and being a focused observer of the human animal. Apprenticed early to an older woman who decided his powers of observation might be useful, she taught him to tell fortunes. When she grew too old to patter convincingly, he eventually inherited some of her customers and made a name for himself as a predictor, a card player and a source of sensible advice to those who knew to ask the right question. Unlucky in love (or resistant to social pressure), he claims he just hasn't met the right girl.
