Even at a young age his mother noticed her son's talents. He was fast, intelligent and had a voice for singing that rivaled the birds. His father was a great military leader of some renown who was hardly ever at home. Instead, he spent most of his time campaigning or in Arx. His father's absence became a point of resentment for the boy but also a point of great pride and a goal for him boy to attain. His mother, capable though she was, often found the young boy uncontrollable and willful. Yet somehow, he managed to grow up into a fine young man despite being just a little rough around the edges. Van quickly took to the military way of life. Discipline and honor were things of his father; things he aspired to possess. He quickly learned the skills of combat, far before he learned the rules of chivalry or of command. Regardless, he was more than capable on the field, with a mind for tactics and a penchant for the daring. This last quality was something that the men serving under Captain Vandorean Laurent were not too keen on and the consequences were disastrous. One day on a mission, Vandorean took a chance, deciding to seize an enemy encampment rather than call and wait for reinforcements. His entire company was decimated and the few that survived all bitterly rebuked their commander to his superiors. Van took the blame and resigned his commission. He turned his focused on becoming a knight in order to follow in the footsteps of his father and hopefully help him become a better commander. Yet he has not changed much. The mercurial young man is still there and though he has learned that actions have consequences.
