Jei's family was killed at a young age and he lived for most of his life as an urchin. He made a living by stealing food and necessities for himself and also was apprenticed to a healer who owned an apocathery. She unfortunately died and Jei was forced to steal again. He came across Paere while attempting to steal the Knight's purse. After hearing the boy's tale, he was made into a squire by Paere and was set to be knighted, but Paere died. Jei professes it was illness and a reaction to his medicine, going on to say he had no reason to kill Paere when the man was committed to knighting him soon. But many within Paere's circle claim Jei poisoned the knight because the knight -refused- to knight Jei.
