When she became old enough to get by without one guardian or another, she became a cut-purse that ran with multiple youth gangs as needed, drifting between the roles of distraction and thief in equal measure. It was here that she learned best how to keep herself subtle, manipulate people into getting what she wanted, and when all else failed how to run quickly. Things changed when she was attempting to steal the purse of an older Scholar of Vellichor - his spectacles had fallen and shattered in the attempt, and Wynna was struck by a bad case of sudden empathy. Abandoning her gang's scheme, she escorted the old fellow, Tristan, back to the Archive, where he proceeded to reveal that he knew her game, to question her unfortunate lot in life at such an early age. Influenced by his words and bearing (and importantly his not throwing her to a guard), she needed little convincing to take up an offer to learn to read and write. While she never quite lost her more conniving touch and her thrill for various rushes of dexterity or fast-talking, Wynna swiftly transformed into an insatiable amateur scholar. Obsessed with all things having to do with reading and writing, she savored the written word like drops of water to a woman dying of thirst. History became a passion as she learned of old places that were ill-visited, of tremendous events occuring in the past and how they may influence the future. She committed names to memory, dates and stories, much to the humble pleasure of her older tutor. While Tristan had to eventually move on to other pursuits and students, it was with some pride that he left Wynna to pursue her own ambitions of learning. Not content with simply being a scholar, Wynna yearned to experience adventure as well - to find the old places she learned of and to uncover their secrets, and to reveal things forgotten so that they might never be again.
