|Background=Idle rich and entitled noble layabouts are found in any great institution in the Compact, and the Inquisition is no exception. Many of the well-born do nothing to hide their narcissism, self-absorbtion, and arrogance, and Prince Laric Grayson - as a distant second cousin to his majesty King Alaric IV - is no exception. Many have underestimated him, thinking that's all there is to the man, and were consequently shocked to discover the iron-clad honor and noblesse oblige behind that charming facade. Well. Somewhat charming.

The grim circumstances of his childhood are a matter of public record. Both of his parents were killed during the Gray Forest Campaign of 970AR, accompanying King Alaric III in what was meant to be a minor action against bandits. He was in no danger of being discarded or impoverished, since even as an orphan he was a prince of House Grayson, but it was still a lonely life for the serious and dedicated young man. He quickly learned that being serious and dedicated was one of the quickest ways to alienate potential political allies who were usually more interested in noble diversions.

He was 'raised' in part by one of the previous Masters of Questions: Berthold Ruger, father of his closest friend Faye. Berthold instilled in him a sense of unflinching duty to the Compact, and he feels a need to follow in the man's footsteps, to make certain the Inquisition remains a powerful tool to serve the good of the Compact -- rather than a political weapon to be used by the powerful to terrify the weak. Berthold's disappearance while investigating the shipwreck that killed King ALaric III was the final straw that convinced young Prince Laric that he had to become an inquisitor himself. Well. Somewhat convinced.

In truth, his bodyguard and companion Faye had just as much to do with it. She had already joined the inquisition, and encouraged him to do the same, to make use of the advantage his royal title would give him to make a real difference -- or at least make sure the real work got done. By himself, Laric is a sharply incisive man and a talented investigator, with a keen deductive mind. But he would readily admit that his moral center is his determined and serious best friend, who has no need to appear frivolous or worry about political alliances. With her, the two are one of the most formidable investigative pairs in the entire compact. They were abroad researching delicate matters for the Crown when word of the King's Rest and King Alaric III's sudden illness reached them. Returning to Arx, they are determined to find any threat to the Compact.

Description

He is a handsome man, his cheekbones high and his jaw strong. He is tall and elegant, laid back and lordly, with an easy smile like a playboy's and a smoldering, lazy laugh. His eyes are the blue of a night sky -- far-off as that night sky, too -- and impossibly dark. Yet, when his gaze comes into focus, it is with an intensity and a clarity of vision that can be compelling -- indeed, overpowering. As his dark hair falls across his eyes, that intensity is again undone.

Personality

On the surface, Laric seems to be a self-important cynic who -- when he acts -- acts out of self-interest, even when he's doing good. He'll laze about, only striking quickly when there's some glory or notoriety to be gained. It's not precisely an act, either. He is a Prince, a Grayson, and there has never been a Prince of Grayson who grew up unsure of his importance.

Background

The grim circumstances of Laric Grayson's childhood are a matter of public record. His parents were killed during the Gray Forest Campaign of 970AR, accompanying King Alaric III in what was meant to be a minor action against bandits. As a young Prince, he was in no danger of being discarded. Nonetheless, it was a lonely life for the young royal. He was 'raised' in part by a previous Master of Questions: Berthold Ruger, father of his closest friend Faye. Berthold instilled in him a sense of unflinching duty to the Compact, and he has always felt a need to follow in the man's footsteps, to make certain the Inquisition remains a powerful tool to serve the realm -- rather than a political weapon to be used by the powerful to terrify the weak. He quickly learned that being serious and dedicated was one of the quickest ways to alienate potential political allies.
